OlymRye.sys Configuration

OlymRye.sys is a pass-through driver from Olympus that allows standard or regular users (i.e. non-administrators) working with Olympus "Rye SDK" cameras in Cam2Com. For any other type of the camera this is totally unnecessary.

If OlymRye.sys is not used, you would have to log on as administrator to use Cam2Com with those cameras. This was the case with Cam2Com for many years. Now OlymRye.sys is part of the standard installation of Cam2Com, and it is installed on the system by default. While the installation of OlymRye.sys is automatic, work with the cameras requires some special efforts.

Repeating, nothing described here is needed if you work with Cam2Com from an administrator’s account or use only cameras other than Olympus "Rye" SDK cameras.

Every camera you use must be registered with OlymRye.sys. It happens automatically during installation, but if you add a new type of camera after that, you may have to do the registration manually. It could be automatic process if it could be done from a regular user account. Unfortunately, it can be done only from and administrators’ account.

The user experience is different of Windows 2000, XP and Vista Operating Systems.

Windows 2000 behavior:

When running Cam2Com from standard account, after adding a new camera to the list of the used cameras, you will have to log on as an administrator and run OlymRye.sys Configuration from Start menu (Sabsik->Cam2Com->OlymRye.sys Configuration). Cam2Com shows a prompt reminding to do it. After running OlymRye.sys Configuration logon back to your regular account and use your new camera with Cam2Com.

Windows XP behavior:

When running Cam2Com from standard account, after adding a new camera to the list of the used cameras, Cam2Com asks you to enter the administrator's name and password. There is no need to log out and log on twice. You can do it right there and get over it, or use the old Windows 2000 method..

Windows Vista behavior:

On Vista Cam2Com uses User Account Control (UAC) feature, getting the administrator's privileges as needed. After selecting a new camera, you would have to enter the administrator's name and password when Operating System asks for. Simply enter the administrator’s name and password and you are done. If you have ran Vista for more than one day you should be familiar with this feature. Even when running from an account that is a member of administrator's group, you would have to acknowledge refreshing the cameras.
