Setting Optical Zoom

There are two ways to control Optical Zoom of a camera. First, it can be done in the Capture Properties dialog. However, for some cameras Optical Zoom can be controlled with better precision in the Advanced Settings dialog.

Camera optical zoom can be set one camera at a time, for the camera whose window is currently active. To open the Advanced Settings dialog, select “Camera|Advanced Settings...” or click the toolbar button. Then select tab Optical Zoom Adjustment.

Adjusting Optical Zoom

In the Optical Zoom Adjustment tab, move the zoom slider to the desired position. Look at the camera LCD or Preview window to verify the correct zoom.

When Cam2Com writes a zoom value to the camera, the camera does not necessarily set zoom to that exact value, but to the one closest to it, which the camera selects by itself. Normally, that value is slightly less than the desired value. Because of this, if you increment the slider position by a very small value, the zoom may actually be decremented. Cam2Com attempts to fix this problem by changing the zoom repeatedly, until it becomes greater  than the previous one. This process is very slow and painful for the camera. It is probably a good idea to set zoom to a very high value and decrement it until the desired zoom is achieved.

For many cameras, the range of the zoom is not known initially. For them, Cam2Com displays button "Detect Capabilities", pressing which runs the standard Detect Camera Capabilities dialog.

Sometimes the camera goes out of focus after adjusting the zoom. If this occurs, change the focus mode to something else (like Macro or Autofocus) and back. This usually helps.

Digital Zoom

Cam2Com does not allow using digital zoom – take a normal picture and use a photo editor program for that.
